New Murcia Airport at Corvera to finally open 15th January 2019

After years of delays and legal battles AENA has announced that Corvera Airport will finally commence operations on 15th January 2019.

The new airport which has stood idle for many years now has an official start date and airlines have started to commit to the new location. Jet2 have announced that flights from Leeds Bradford and Manchester will start flying into the new airport from March 2019 and its booking facility on their website now offers Corvera to it’s customers. There are 3 weekly services from both airports operating until 25th October 2019. Flights will continue into the existing San Javier Airport until the end of November this year.

Earlier this month Easyjet announced its intention to transfer to Corvera Airport from January 2019 as the existing San Javier Airport ceases operations. Currently served by flights from Gatwick and Southend no timetables have been updated at present with the new Murcia Airport ID of RMU for Corvera..

No decision from Ryanair has been announced yet which is currently the principal airline that serves San Javier from several UK airports plus Dublin and Frankfurt. Other airlines such as Iberia, Vueling  and Norwegian are also understood to be in negotiation with Aena the operators to commence flights to Corvera.

With San Javier airport reporting passenger numbers increasing all the time Corvera still has a role as a supporting airport to the much larger operation at Alicante. The Regional Government for Murcia has also announced a budget of €4.1 million to promote the region in various European cities as a major all year round tourist destination. The cities chosen will those with direct flights that will operate to the new Corvera Airport.

With continued investment at Alicante airport including improved transport links the regions golf resorts such as La Manga Club, Las Colinas, Mar Menor Golf Resort and Roda Golf and Beach Resort will continue to be popular destinations for golfers looking for all year round golf in the sun
